Wines of Croatia Blog Annual Report: 2011 in Review

Dear readers,

First, we begin 2012 with an fresh, clean new blog design. I hope you like it!

Also, I just wanted to thank everyone who visited the blog, commented, and shared our posts in 2011.  You guys rock!

In case you were wondering, we had over 42,000 views in 2011 – an average of 116 per day, and almost 70,000 (and growing) visits since our first post on December 21, 2009. Not sure how that stacks up in the BIG blog world, but I think it is pretty awesome! So THANK YOU again. And please help us to make 2012 an even better year by contributing ideas for the blog, commenting, and sharing our posts far and wide.

The concert hall at the Syndey Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 42,000 times in 2011. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 16 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

  • Congrats for all the previous work and persistency. Despite being in Croatia and let’s say closer to the scene this blog is excellent source of information for anyoone in the country and abroad and to anyone more or less attached to the Croatian wine world which than by itself just keeps growing and profilinig into a modern and more competitive one. With sound reason, off course. While for the advices, whish you to keep being persistant, the run might be long and hope that will be some extra time to transfer all the content to self hosted site one day. On
    This is some similar issue I’m dealing with with several of my sites and it never ends. Many good wines in 2012!!

    Thank you very much for your kind words and sound advice. Yes, perseverance, determination – and endurance are key, as we do have much more work to do and many more miles to travel before Croatian wines receive the recognition and love they deserve. As long and hard as the road can be, there is always an award at the end of the day: a nice, delicious glass of Croatian wine. I am proud and honored to do whatever I can to help Croatia’s winemakers to put their product into the hands of more and more wine lovers. 🙂

  • Congrats on a great blog and for covering the topic with such enthusiasm, and I look forward to spamming you with lots of info about the wines of Hvar this year. Speaking of which, should have details of this year’s Hvar Wine Festival in the next few days, so will send on.

  • Sometimes I have impression that this blog is still bit ahead of time, or at least ahead of Croatian time (some might disagree). Reluctancy of participation of it’s readers, from time to time, suggest me so. Winemakers definitely should follow this stream if they want to reap some benefits and on that note I will try to quote legendary Mike Grgich best I can, when he once gave advice to one Croatian local wine maker. He said: “To succed in wine business you should allways keep one foot in the winery and another outside one on the market. You miss one of these, the things might just pass by…”
    For the glass I hope we’ll have some occasion if not in NY than in Zagreb, Korcula or else. It will be big pleasure to me as a little wine hobist.

    We care about Croatian wines since ten years, and i must say, there is a long way to go for most of the Croatian wineries. There are only some wineries, who recognized the need to expand to the EU and US market. Fortunately we have now 5-8 wineries in out portfolio, we can develope business in the German speaking countries.
    Biggest problem still: High prices! There ist no justification to sell a Matusko Dingac for 25 Euro or a Grgich Plavac mali for 40 Euro. We need a healthy “mid-Price-segement” to be really succussful. Furthermore we need much more support by a well-functioning Croatian wine community, which doesn’t exists. It’s so easy: No money – no Marketing – no revenue development. There are so many individual interests and opinions, which hinder a common, wide approach to the majo markets in Europe and US.
    Only very few wineries are willing to invest. The thinking is: Oh, I did one event in Munich, where are the revenues!
    But: I want to name Roxanich as a very positive example. And some others will follow this example.

    • Thank you for your kind words, Gerhard. You are 100% right. No marketing $ = no revenue $. There is so much more that the wineries should be doing. Let’s hope 2012 will see some changes. In the meantime, I hope you continue to enjoy this blog. Your support is much appreciated.
